2009 AM/PIC  Pre-conference Horticulture Tour

This year’s pre-conference Horticulture Tour will require tour participants to arrive at the Conference headquarters Hotel, the DoubleTree by Thursday night, Sept. 17, 2009.  This will allow family members of tour participants to remain at the DoubleTree until the tour returns on Sept. 19th.
The tour will involve stops throughout the Willamette Valley for 2 days, staying the night of Sept. 18 in Salem, Oregon.  Tour stops will feature sights of commercial horticultural interests.  Details will be made available as the tour develops.  The Horticulture Committee would like to thank Oregon Educator Derek Godwin for helping to make tour arrangements.
Tour participants need not make their own hotel reservations for the nights of Sept. 17, 18, and 19, but will be made in advance by NACAA for Tour participants.  Tour participants should plan to make their own, standard hotel reservations for the Conference beginning Sunday night, Sept. 20th.

The committee currently has a total of approximately $1000 to use toward expenses for this tour.  The funds will be used to help offset some of the lodging expense for the nights of September 18 and 19 and will be allocated to NACAA members.  You will be billed for the difference in room charges at check out.  NACAA members are encouraged to share a room, for the maximum benefits to you for the available tour funds.  NACAA members staying with family members will be allocated 1X funds toward their room charge as opposed to 2X for 2 NACAA members sharing a room.

Additional charges associated with this tour, that will need to be covered by the NACAA member include meal expenses, and travel costs associated with van rental and fuel charges.  Members are encouraged to seek sponsorships through your contacts with potential donors.  The more funds that can be raised through sponsorships, the more we will have to work with to cover our expenses for this tour.

Update:

The overnight stay in Salem, will most likely be at the Phoenix Inn Suites (Select the North Salem on their website - http://www.phoenixinn.com/ ).   Rates are $70 for Single and $89 for Double occupancy.  Again - you are NOT to make your own room reservation, we have a block of rooms reserved.

We plan to rent 3 vans which seat 9 -10 adults comfortably, and as of 6-11-09. we are pretty much at capacity. Please plan to pack an overnight bag to take on the tour van for the overnight trip down to Salem on Friday.  We hope to make arrangements with the Double Tree to store the bulk of the balance of our luggage with them for our return.  Realize we will also have to essentially check out of the Double Tree Friday morning before the trip, then check back in on Saturday evening, possibly check out again or switch to a different room on Sunday morning for the balance of the conference.

Dress is definitely casual and comfortable - especially if it is hot - some folks have worn shorts in the past.  I usually wear a polo shirt and casual kakis.

Horticulture and Turfgrass   2008 Committee Report to Members

Jim Hruskoci

Committee Members:

Jim Hruskoci, North Central Region, and National Chair

R. David Myers, Eastern Region Vice-Chair

Jo Ann Robbins, Western Region Vice-Chair

Brian Jervis, Southern Region Vice-Chair

Participation in the Horticulture and Turfgrass committee activities of the NACAA provides members with excellent professional improvement opportunities in all areas of horticulture, from landscaping and turfgrass to commercial fruit and vegetable production, and more.

The goal of this committee is to attract membership attendance to the AM/PIC of individuals with horticulture interests.  Whether your job responsibilities in horticulture are full or part time, we believe there is something at the NACAA AM/PIC for you.  While many horticulture members have the option of attending the ASHS meetings held at approximately the same time, we believe the AM/PIC can provide a more direct application to meet your horticulture professional improvement needs and at a more affordable cost.

The committee plans a Horticulture Pre-conference tour for the Saturday prior to the AM/PIC.  The tour is funded by NACAA members, unless commercial donors can be found.  For the second year Ball Horticulture partially supported the tour, saving members some money on lodging costs.  Thanks go out to North Carolina Educator Terry Garwood for helping to plan and organize the tour, as well as Michael Hylton who also helped make arrangements and for serving as our local host.  Fourteen NACAA members attended the pre-conference tour which was held Saturday, July 12.  Tour stops included

a mushroom farm of Deb and Randy Bettini and the New Garden Nursery both near Greensboro, the Metrolina Greenhouses and the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Huntersville and Belmont, and finally the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden.

The Horticulture/Turfgrass committee meeting/workshop was held Monday, July14.  Topics discussed included planning the 2009 Conference pre-tour and fund raising efforts.

There was overwhelming interest on the part of members to make horticulture presentations, with a total of 18 presentations given during the Horticulture/Turfgrass seminars held on Tuesday, July 15th.  Presentations were divided into separate concurrent tracks by topic and these included:  Master Gardeners, Lawns and Landscaping, and Fruits, Vegetables, and more.  Presentations ran 30 minutes in length, were synchronized with the other talks, so those in attendance could move freely from one track to another in nearby rooms.
